Q&A with Malcolm PigfordJuly 31, 2018
(CARSON, CA) - We caught up with the Head Coach of the Cali Wolfpack after completing their first ever training camp and were able to have a great Q&A session. Q: How has the first offseason of the Wolfpack gone so far in your opinion? A: Our offseason was great. The staff put a lot of work in all facets of the program. From seeking and acquiring young promotable talent, to building sponsorship relationships our off season has been full of work...very productive. Q: What kind of opportunity is the DFI for the players, coaches, and fans? A: The opportunity to further the football aspirations of our players has to be the number one takeaway from this season. Playing in a professional type atmosphere among and against high caliber athletes with the similar aspirations is the closest they will get to professional paid football at this point. Coaches get an opportunity to train and develop the best athletes available to them. They're able to scheme and call games with pro level talent in hopes of furthering their careers while learning from other seasoned coaches. Fans are in for a real treat. Our fans can not only see top talent for low prices, but when a DFI athlete is promoted to the next level they have the unique opportunity and privilege to say they saw them play at the local level. Q: What is your number one goal for the 2018 season? A: Our number one goal is to get players to the next level. Winning games are great. Selling out stadiums would be nice, but our focus is on promoting players to the next level of football as well as in building men with the tools to live a successful life. Q: Who are the players that have really stood out this offseason? A: From the start Cory Butler-Byrd jumps out as a WR/KR. Not only is he extremely talented, a gifted athlete with elite level speed and agility, he also gets the mental aspect of the game...the chess game. But the most refreshing part is his work ethic. He works like a freshman in college trying to get reps and be promoted from the scout team. Travon Payne is also a rising star at wide receiver. He is a WR with great speed, route running, reliable hands, and great physicality. He will force you to keep an eye on him. On the defensive side of the ball defensive back Tim Moten is an absolute specimen. He has great size, speed, athleticism, strength, and physicality. The nickel position was created for him. He is also a film junkie and keeps his body in prime condition. He is poised for a great season. |
